In the winter, you must make sure that you drain any water at all from water systems, pumps, air conditioners, and etc. However, some companies are able to accept boats with some water and fuel in the tanks, usually around 25% full but they would rather you drain all of it instead.

Disconnect any batteries and make sure you don't leave them loose. Remove the anchors from the deck of the boat. If your transporting a wooden boat then you should let the boat dry out first. Using linseed oil can help speed up the process.

You will have to remove any and all canvas covers because they will tear and/or fly off during transportation. Permitting your boat has its own cradle, you should survey it for any loose bolts or possible hazards.

Any external accessories on board the boat you will have to pack away securely or remove from the boat. This includes electronics, radars, horns, antennas, flag masts, propellers, and etc.

Hatches should be tied or taped from the outside of the boat. If it leaks you should seal them. The boat will not always be sitting in one position during transportation so leaking is possible if you do not seal it before hand.

Cabin windows should be shut, latched and taped from the outside. Windshields or Plexiglas which will be over the flying bridge should always be removed, packed together using a cargo blanket and secured in below the boat.
